When I was a kid, this illustration by Garth Williams, from the Giant Golden Book of Elves and Fairies, captured my imagination. I wanted to live in a cool place like this some day.
It actually came true, in a basement apartment that had the same ambiance as the elves' root house. The ducts that ran along the ceiling were the tree roots. It was peacefully dim, and a whole lot of creative work got done. (click on the picture to see it bigger.)
